Quick Facts and Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Here’s where you get quick and easy answers to common questions.

Who is it for and Why should I use it ?

Today’s surveying business is loaded with big data, and it doesn’t matter if you’re the one collecting it, or if you’re the end user of the project results : big data it is.
So how are you going to manage that ?  Spend fortunes on IT, duplicate terabytes of data for different departments, trying to keep track of what you have available and what not.

It’s about time to get rid of such a headache.  And our 3dmapping.cloud has the answers to each and all of these problems.
At Orbit GT, we have over 10 years in experience with Mobile and UAS Mapping.  Terabytes are not an issue for us.  Nor is fusion of data and combining sensors such as cameras and laser scanner.  Our proven technology has broad and strong industry support, is being used globally, and covers a wide range of applications.  This technology is now brought to the web.  And as a bonus, to all portable devices as well.

The SaaS model allows for a moderate monthly spending rather than a full purchase of IT infrastructure, that’s a no brainer.  On top, it returns supplementary business models, sharing opportunities and most of all integration capabilities that boost performance and time-to-market.

From a usage point of view, it allows you to tender out based on data specifications, accuracies and other quality parameters, instead of on hardware choice.  You can use data from various vendors, contractors or archives, and combine with your own.  Isn’t that how it’s supposed to be ?

In every team, for every project, managing big data is an issue.
In the 3D Mapping business, data tends to get even larger, and collected more and more.

From operational and technical perspective, you have to challenge data management and sharing,
fusion of Mobile 3D scanning with UAS data and its matching imagery, maybe even using aerial LiDAR, oblique images, Indoor and terrestrial scanning.
And combine that with your GIS/CAD data.  And you require processing, feature extraction, measurements, analysis ?  And access from portable devices ?
And finally people want integrations into their hosts, their workflows, their websites.  Ouch.

Well, search no more.  This is exactly what the 3D Mapping Cloud is doing for you.

We all know that managing your own IT infrastructure is a burden and a large cost.
SaaS based solutions offer relief to any IT department and especially regarding its TCO.
Furthermore, managing big data requires big infrastructure, so SaaS becomes even more cost-saving.

On the operational side, tons of money get saved by the capability to easily share information in real time,
be on top of a project, and have instant status feedback.

Then this is the place to be.
Check out all the capabilities that the 3dmapping.cloud is offering.  You’ll be stunned.
Orbit GT is specialised in large datasets, managing Mobile Mapping and UAS mapping since over 10 years.  A point cloud file of a couple of TB’s is not an issue – it may contain millions of billions of points.  It does.  And it works.  The same counts for imagery. where our optimisation and compression algorithms are applicable for all types of imagery being plain RGB, thermal, greyscale or black&white, be it GIS resources such as orthophoto’s or streetmaps, or raw camera images from Mobile Mapping or drones.
So you’ll need to check out the full Orbit GT portfolio. That’s true for smaller datasets as well !

Then this is the place to be.
Easy sharing with your co-workers, either within your team or in another department, even on the other side of the globe.
But also sharing with third-party users such as customers, contractors, consultants and others.  Define access to data by setting the right permissions, all form your 3dmapping.cloud management console.
It’s also easy to integrate in anyone’s workflow by using the SDK or ready-made plugins for select hosts.  Embed 3dmapping.cloud in any workflow, host or website to optimise the sharing of your data.

Then this is the place to be.
You are challenged with combining Mobile Mapping data with UAS data ?  Or Indoor Mapping with Terrestrial scans ?  Maybe you have aerial LiDAR and wants dense matched point clouds form Oblique Imagery.  Or mix that with your GIS/CAD resources ?
Say no more ! That’s exactly what the 3dmapping.cloud is intended for.

Then this is the place to be.
The 3dmapping.cloud is not only a website to host, view, share and analyse vast volumes of data.  It also offers an SDK to embed all of this within your workflow, your host, your website.  On top of that, the SDK is totally free !

Do you need to integrate GIS/CAD data ? Well, you can upload it and use it straight away in your web application, but you can also overlay vector data that is hosted by your application in the SDK.  Finally, the SDK also allows to convert measurements to features and have your host save them in your database.  Isn’t that amazing !?

Then this is the place to be.
Orbit GT is world leader in maximising the use of Mobile Mapping with it’s very complete suite of desktop products.  It will be no surprise that this superior technology is now being migrated to the cloud.
Wether you need point clouds, spherical imagery, planar imagery or GIS resources online, 3dmapping.cloud can handle it.  Make measurements on the fly in any combination of data, and allow co-workers or third-party users to access the same information, as per your permissions settings.  No more hassling with discs, thank you sir !
Feature Extraction ?  Processing ?   Multi-user access and Asset Tracking ? There’s so much to discover we can’t list it.  As part of the Orbit GT portfolio, the 3dmapping.cloud is ready to address all of your needs.

Then this is the place to be.
By having instant access to all of your data, you’re on top over your project.  Who-ever is working on it, either within your team, your organisation, or as contractor, you’ll know it.
You have full control over who has access to which data and what that person is allowed to do with it.
And from every device.  How cool is that ?

Then this is the place to be.
It is quite obvious that the IT infrastructure required to support these immense volumes of data is not an every day job.  It’s an ongoing battle.  Many studies have shown that the Total Cost of Ownership of your own IT setup cannot match up with the cloud based SaaS model.  So if you have too much money to spend, by all means go ahead.  You’ll probably prefer to use one of our on-premises Publisher products anyway : check out the Orbit GT website.

But logically, the SaaS model is not only profitable, it also reliefs you of many headaches : no setup, no hardware maintenance, no software upgrades, no storage backups, and so much more.  Thank (who-ever you like) for this !

How does it work ?

3D Mapping.cloud is a self-service web application.  It consists out of the following elements :

  1. A Viewer for 3D data
  2. A Console to manage you stuff

The 3D Mapping Cloud especially supports huge volume datasets, such as from (vehicle based outdoor) Mobile Mapping, Indoor Mapping, UAS Mapping, Oblique Mapping or Terrestrial Mapping.  Typically, these datasets consist out of Point Clouds and/or Imagery, and maybe other sensors.

You can Upload your data, View and Share within your organisation or to others.

The Viewer has ever growing capabilities, among which it’s availability as SDK to build plugins in any host software or website.

3D Mapping.cloud is a self-service web application.  Here’s what you need to do :

  1. Create an account.  Choose a Plan or go for a Trail.
  2. Upload data.  Sample data available.
  3. View your data.  Explore the capabilities of the viewer system.

It’s that easy.

Take a look at the Sign Up Guide.
A short overview on how to use the viewer can be found on the Getting Started page.

The 3D Mapping Cloud is foremost intended to support Reality Capture style complex datasets that are collected with vehicle, drone, airplane, backpack, cart, even traditional tripod scanning, or other alike data capture systems.  Such data is likely to be multi-sensor, typically LiDAR and/or Imagery.  The Orbit technology can handle all of these types and setups and has a global proven record through it’s desktop and publisher portfolio’s.

Supported Data :

  • (Street-level) Mobile Mapping
  • UAS Mapping
  • Indoor Mapping
  • Oblique Mapping (including aerial LiDAR, dense matched point cloud and DEM)
  • Terrestrial Scanning (now increasingly including imagery)
  • Most GIS resources

For complex datasets data needs to be prepped accordingly.  Tools to inspect, select, consolidate and optimise raw data and ready them for cloud upload, are available from Orbit GT and partners.  Orbit GT has excellent technical relations with all major and minor hardware vendors, and can even support anything you bolt together yourself.  So, “vendor neutral” is very applicable indeed.

Security and Privacy are covered by design.
The 3dmapping.cloud uses 2-step user verification, user authentification, secured SSL sockets, private implementation of user identification, binary data transfer, and no directly access to any of your data (physical data storage location cannot be accessed from outside the cloud’s servers).  It is probably the most secure environment in the mapping business.

It is even possible to setup your own private ‘cloud within the cloud’ to ensure that you have your private storage discs and computers running for only your organisation.  Isn’t that cool ?

About Account, Users and Roles

Every organisation should create a single account.   An account holds information such as :

  • The Company details
  • A list of Named Users, i.e. co-workers in the same organisation.
  • A ‘bucket’ of Guest Users
  • A bunch of Data
  • A Subscription and Billing details
  • Further options

The user who creates the account, is the Owner of the account (Role = owner), and has obviously all possible permissions. One of those is Inviting other users and setting their Roles.  Other permissions are uploading data, setting view permissions on data, inviting users from other companies, setting the billing method, adding Add-Ons such as Storage and Guest Users,  and other company administrative details.

In a Subscription, you choose for how many users and for how long you wish to use the 3D Mapping Cloud :
– The amount of (named) users defines the price.
– You can choose to pay monthly or yearly (best value)

Add-Ons can be selected  as well, such as Storage (by TBs) and Guest Users.

The Subscription and Add-Ons can be adjusted to your needs at any time.

Read more : About Subscriptions

Every 3D Mapping Cloud user is a Named User.  This means he or she is individually identified and known by the system.  Key identification is a unique email address for that person.  A Named User is associated with a single Account, i.e. the account of the organisation where he or she works for.

The way this person may use the 3D Mapping Cloud is defined by the User Role and the Permissions associated with that role.
Secondly, this person may have access permissions to view some datasets, and some not.

  • The Role and its Permissions are tied to this individual and cannot be transferred.
  • The Owner and Administrators of the Account can assign Roles and Permissions to each Named User.
  • There can be as many Named Users as your Account’s Plan permits.  Users can be disabled to let other users make use of the same maximum amount of Named Users.

All Named Users within an organisation must be part of a single Account of that organisation.  An Account may not list users from another organisation.

About The Billing Agent.

There can be one or more Billing Agents that will not be counted as a Named User as long as he/she has no other permissions than managing the billing details.
You can engage a Billing Agent to manage your plan, company and credit card data, access invoices, and more.

Read more : About Named Users.

You can upload data as follows :

  • By using the desktop Upload tool, embedded in Orbit 3DM Content Manager
Use this to upload complex data such as a Mobile Mapping run.
  • By sending a disc to us.
Use this when your dataset is too large to be uploaded.
  • By using our free-of-charge Upload Tool.

Read more : About Upload Tools , About Resources.

User Roles define at large what a user is allowed to do.  Typically, there are 3 main aspects of using the 3D Mapping Cloud :

  • Permissions in relation to User management
  • Permissions in relation to Data management
  • Permissions in relation to the use of data

Every user has a Role, which at first the Owner decides upon.  The Owner can delegate the management of users and their permissions to a Team Manager by assigning the Role “Team Manager” to that user.

Read more on the About Roles page.

The Billing Agent is a user that can only access the account to manage the financial elements of the account, such as transactions, payments, invoices, coupons, credit card entry and alike.

The BillingAgent can either be the Owner, or a dedicated user.  In the latter case, the BillingAgent will not be counted as Named User as long as he or she has no other Roles or Permissions.

Tip : Assign the Billing Agent Role to someone within your financial administration.  That person can follow up the financials without the need of operational use of the 3D Mapping Cloud.  In doing so, this person’s access is free.

About Data, Resources, Sharing and Publications

In 3D Mapping Cloud, you can use your own data or data from a third party.  You can mix and fuse them all together.

Each unit of data is called a Resource.  Resources are uploaded, viewed, shared, fused etc.

A resource can be anything from a set of Points, Lines or Areas, to a complex dataset for Mobile Mapping, UAS, Oblique or Indoor mapping.

Read more : About Resources

One of 3D Mapping Cloud’s paramount features, is the ease to share data.

Every Resource or Resource Group can be shared with anyone else, on the level of a user, a team or a whole organisation.  It can be within your organisation, or within any other organisation.  Only 1 requirement : the other user, team or organisation must be known in 3D Mapping Cloud.

When a Resource is first uploaded, it is set to Private for the user who uploaded it.  He thus is ‘Owner’ of the Resource.  He can then use the Console to change ownership or assign Administrators for this Resource.  You need to be either Owner or Administrator in order to Share the Resource with anyone.

Sharing is more flexible when using an informal Bookmark of a formally set-up Publication.  You can share with Named Users, but also with Guest Users that do not requite to Sign In.

Read more : About Sharing Resources, About Guest Users

As a Named User, you can click and select any number of Resources to view simultaneously.  This provides wit great flexibility and instant power.  There is also another way to access Resources, in a prepped and setup way : a Publication.

A Publication is intended to provide access to a preset of Resources for a specific purpose, for example, a specific job, or sharing with the public at large.  Here’s how we make a Publication :

  • Choose a Screen Layout
  • Choose the Resources
  • Set your views
  • Hit ‘Create Publication’

Yes it’s that simple.  Now specify with whom to share in the Console and you’re ready to go.
